KODEM - Observation inventory to assess the communication skills of persons with dementia

Background and objectives of the project

Dementia is generally associated with a diverse range of impairments in communication that can have a significant negative impact on the well-being of those concerned. There are currently only few validated instruments to assess the communication skills of people with dementia, and those that do exist do not explicitly measure them but address them only superficially. The KODEM observation inventory represents the first reliable and valid assessment tool designed explicitly to measure the communication skills of persons with dementia. It has been successfully evaluated in the inpatient sector and is currently being adapted and evaluated for use in the outpatient sector.
